This episode is inspired by the conversation between Chadwick Boseman and Trevor Noah during an interview on the Daily Show. I have watched it before, but I had to rewatch the interview after the sad passing of Chadwick Boseman.

As a writer and published author, I get the opportunity of determining which character is the main character or the hero of any story I am working on. This made me reflect on how Chadwick discussed being the hero of your own story helped to integrate various African cultures, values, traditions and languages during the making of Black Panther. I learnt that owning your life, past, background, present and future could help you create something legendary. You should be the hero of your own story. You should see yourself overcoming any obstacles or challenges that come your way.

This makes me remember what I understand from conversations with my mother. She says that there is only an extent to which she and my father could help me in the journey of life. All they could do was to provide me with all the essentials while growing up; a place to live, clothes to wear, food to eat, a quality education, moral values, spiritual values and lot more. But it is left to me to take all of these blessings, experiences and tools to get the best of out my life, the carve out the future that I have always dreamt about, to write a story that I will be proud of.

Life is an adventure that we are opportune to experience. It’s a story we are writing from seconds to seconds, minute to minute, hour to hour, day to day, week to week and years to years. Congratulations, you get to play the main character of this story, you get to be the author of this story, the ruler, dictator and determiner of the fate of your character. The fun part is that we get to meet other characters along the way, we get to also feature in other people’s story, we get to learn from other characters and contribute to their story.

To be the hero of my story, I am learning not to confine myself to living a life of conformity. I am learning to step up for myself and by myself to design a life of my dreams, a life that a younger me would be proud of. I am learning to develop myself, to take actions that would navigate me in the right direction to fulfil my purpose. Over the months, I have learnt that no matter how much I pray and depend on God for support, He is only going to bless the works of my hand, He is only going to multiply what I already have in my hands, He is only going to add more superpowers to the hero that I have created for my own story.

I am not a motivational speaker, but I know that you have what it takes to be the hero of your own story. You know and have what it takes to mould yourself into that person that you truly want to be.

This journey of life, this adventure, this beautiful and unique story of ours will surely come to an end one day. For some people sooner than the others, but that is something we cannot control. What we can influence is what we do with the time that we are given. From Ecclesiastes 9:10, I read that whatever presents itself for you to do, do it with all your might, because there is no work, planning, knowledge, or skill in the grave where you’re going.
